Technology drives learning experiences for primary school students

The learning landscape for primary schools has undergone significant transformation in recent years. In large part because of the innovative drive to deliver exceptional digital experiences that enhance learning outcomes and the large-scale adoption of personal devices as vital tools for productivity.

The modern classroom is no longer constrained to the physical campus. Primary schools wanting to deliver immersive and student-enabled learning environments need technology and solutions that inspire and engage, regardless of where learning happens.

1. Research, learn and present with the one device

It’s mid-morning and the teacher has just set a research task to be executed and presented  after lunch. With the term’s history topic being Australian Parliament and Prime Ministers, each student is given one hour to research a Prime Minister of their choice before reconvening to present their findings to the class.

2. Mistakes happen, but downtime can be avoided

The saying often goes ‘kids will be kids’, and when it comes to technology and devices in particular, the possibility of damaged devices is ever-present. Picture this, it’s lunchtime and one student is showing a friend from another class the research they’ve just been working on for their Prime Ministers of Australia task. While the notebook is open their friend accidentally spills some water over the keyboard which prompts the student holding the device to jump up, resulting in the device falling to the ground and hitting the concrete on its side.

Had this been a consumer-grade device there would be a strong likelihood of damaged keys from water exposure and potentially cracks to the screen and chassis. 3. Learning and collaboration continues regardless of who is on campus

Natural disasters, uncertainty around the ongoing pandemic, and the approaching flu season mean many students have already had to or will need to be at home at certain times throughout the year.

On this day, two students are interacting with their classmates from home having had to isolate while awaiting COVID test results. But just because they’re at home it doesn’t mean they can’t still be part of the class. 4. Take learning beyond the physical classroom

As the day develops and the students wrap up their Prime Minister presentations, attention turns to the afternoon, which will centre around biology and in particular, local insects and other fauna that can be found around the school grounds, or in the case of the two students at home, their backyards. The teacher does a short presentation of some insects likely to be living close by before encouraging the class to go out into the grounds and document what they find by taking a photo using their devices Privacy Cameras in tablet mode.

It’s a lovely afternoon and the students enjoy their time in the grounds, documenting a range of different fauna that complement their theoretical learnings, but provide tangible advancements through first-hand discovery. 5. Encourage hands-on experiences

After returning to class and a quick open discussion about their findings, the students are asked to return to their desks and draw their two favourites. But these drawings will be a little different. With two students at home and so everyone can see the findings, the students are asked to do their drawings on their HP devices and then upload them into a shared drive for everyone to access.
